Your irons are the most-used clubs in your bag. They get hit from a wider range of lies, distances and pressure situations than any other club, and the differences between a properly fitted set and an off-the-rack set show up on every round.Most golfers have at least one 20-yard gap somewhere in their irons that they don't know about.
They've also usually got at least one overlap, where two clubs are travelling roughly the same distance, which means one of them isn't really earning its place in the bag. The first thing we do in an iron fitting is find both.
What happens in the session
Around two hours. We start with the gapping analysis on your current set, then move through head options from Titleist, TaylorMade, Callaway, Srixon, Wilson Staff, Miura and Ping. We don't keep you in one brand if your numbers say a different one suits you better.Once heads are decided, we work through shafts. Steel or graphite, lightweight or heavy, low launch or high.
There are a lot of categories and the right one depends on your club head speed, your transition tempo and what you want the ball to do at impact. We test until the numbers point clearly somewhere.
Lie angle matters more than people think
Two degrees off in lie angle moves your strike around six yards offline at a 150-yard target. That's the difference between a green in regulation and a chip from the side. We fit lie angle using lie board impact tape, not by eye and not by your wrist-to-floor measurement alone.
Combination sets
Most of our iron fittings end up with a combination set, where the long irons are a more forgiving model and the short irons are a more controllable one. Sometimes from the same manufacturer, sometimes not. We'll explain why if it applies to you.
Hand-built
This is where hand-build matters most in the bag. Factory tolerances on length, loft, lie angle and swing weight are wider than the small adjustments we make in the fitting bay. A set built by hand in our Bedford workshop leaves with every club matched to every other, head to head and length to length.
